2024 saw transformative education and skill initiatives in India, empowering youth with new-age skills and opportunities.

The year 2024 was filled with transformative initiatives for the country’s education sector, as the Government reaffirmed its commitment to providing comprehensive, inclusive, and digital education aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Various online learning platforms, schemes, and scholarships were launched to support this vision. A few groundbreaking initiatives taken by the Ministry of Education in the past year are as follows:

PRERNA Program Launched to Promote Value-Based Learning

At the beginning of 2024, the Ministry of Education launched Prerana: An Experiential Learning Program, which focuses on the philosophy of value-based education. It aims to offer meaningful experiences to participants and cultivate leadership qualities in them.

Prerana is a week-long residential program for selected students from classes IX to XII, featuring experiential and inspirational learning with cutting-edge technology, where heritage meets innovation. Every week, a batch of 20 students (10 boys and 10 girls) from various parts of the country will attend the program.

SWAYAM Plus Platform

In February 2024, the SWAYAM Plus platform was launched to expand existing offerings and include courses aligned with industry needs, enhancing learners’ employability. SWAYAM, the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform, was launched by the Ministry of Education in 2017.

SWAYAM Plus offers courses in sectors like Manufacturing, Energy, Computer Science, IT/ITES, Healthcare, and Social Science. The platform also features multilingual content, AI-enabled guidance, credit recognition, and pathways to employment.

APAAR In Remote Villages In India

APAAR (Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry) was launched through Common Service Centres (CSCs) in remote villages across India. APAAR, introduced in alignment with NEP 2020 and the National Credit and Qualifications Framework (NCrF), assigns a unique 12-digit ID to each student, consolidating their academic achievements in one place.

PM-Vidyalaxmi Scheme to Support Meritorious Students in Higher Education

In November 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the PM-Vidyalaxmi scheme to provide financial support to meritorious students pursuing higher studies. The scheme aims to offer education loans to over 22 lakh students annually who are admitted to the top 860 quality higher educational institutions. Under this scheme, students can avail collateral-free and guarantor-free loans, with a simple, student-friendly, and fully digital application process.

Country’s First Skill India Centre

In February 2024, Union Minister of Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, inaugurated the first Skill India Centre (SIC) in Sambalpur, Odisha, empowering youth with new-age skills. The center, which aims to train over 1,200 students, focuses on high-growth sectors such as Media & Entertainment, Leather, Tourism & Hospitality, and IT-ITeS.

The SIC will collaborate with industry experts to shape its curriculum, ensuring alignment with evolving market demands. Additional SICs will be launched across Odisha to promote rural development and create employment opportunities for youth.

NIMI Launches YouTube Channels to Revolutionize Vocational Education

In September 2024, the National Instructional Media Institute (NIMI), under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, launched a series of YouTube channels. This digital initiative aims to provide free, high-quality training videos to millions of learners across India’s Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) ecosystem.

The channels are available in nine languages—English, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Punjabi, Malayalam, Telugu, and Kannada—and offer tutorials, skill demonstrations, and theoretical lessons in sectors like manufacturing, electronics, and IT.

Indian Institute of Skills, Mumbai

In October 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) in Mumbai, a significant move to enhance the employability of India’s youth. The institute, built in partnership between the Ministry of Skill Development and Tata IIS, aims to equip students with skills in emerging technologies such as factory automation, digital manufacturing, mechatronics, artificial intelligence, and additive manufacturing.

Located on a 4-acre campus at the National Skill Training Institute in Chunabhatti, Mumbai, the IIS offers hands-on, industry-ready training. It launched six specialized courses, including Advanced Industrial Automation & Robotics and Electric Vehicle Battery Specialist programs. Plans for hostel facilities to support students’ learning experiences are also underway.
