The Maharashtra government said Republic Day, celebrated on January 26, will no longer be a holiday for school students. The Maharashtra School Education Department in a circular letter released this week said that students across the state must spend the day in activities that instill a sense of national pride in them.
In the past, students received a holiday after the flag-hoisting ceremony on January 26. However, from 2025 onwards, they will need to participate in various activities and events organized within the school, as per the new directive.
The circular mandates all government and private schools to observe Republic Day with full-day patriotic programs. Activities will include flag hoisting, morning rallies, elocution and poetry contests, cultural performances, art and essay competitions, sports events and exhibitions.
The initiative seeks to instill national pride by teaching students about India’s history, culture and vision for the future. District education officers and inspectors have been assigned the responsibility of overseeing the proper implementation of these guidelines, according to news agencies.
