JEE Advanced Attempt Limit Case: The Supreme Court of India will hear the case regarding the JEE Advanced attempt limit on January 7, 2025. The petition, filed by 22 students challenging the reduction of the attempt limit from three to two, was scheduled to be heard today. However, as SG Tushar Mehta was unavailable due to commitments in another court, the matter will now be taken up tomorrow. The initial hearing of the case was scheduled for December 20, 2024.
What Is JEE Advanced Attempt Limit Case?
The Joint Admission Board (JAB), which conducts admissions to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), announced on November 5, 2024, that students would be allowed three attempts for JEE Advanced. However, just a few days later, on November 18, 2024, the decision was reversed, and the attempt limit was reduced back to two.
To challenge this sudden change, 22 JEE aspirants have approached the Supreme Court. They argue that the change caused them significant problems, as many had started preparing for the exam under the assumption that they would have a third attempt.
The petitioners explain that they had already registered for the JEE Main exam, joined coaching programmes, and made other changes to their academic plans, such as dropping out of other college courses.
The petitioners claim that the JAB’s decision was unfair, lacked transparency, and was made without proper consultation. They have asked the Supreme Court to cancel the press release issued on November 18, 2024, and allow all students who passed Class 12 in 2023 to be eligible for JEE Advanced 2025 with the three-attempt limit.

Why Did JAB Reverse The Attempt Limit To Two?
The Joint Admission Board (JAB) decided to restore the two-attempt rule after considering several competing factors, according to a notice released on November 18, 2024
“The Joint Admission Board (JAB) has decided to revert to the previous eligibility criterion for the number of attempts in JEE (Advanced), replacing the rule mentioned in the press release dated November 5, 2024. This decision was made after considering various requirements during a meeting held on November 15, 2024. As a result, the earlier eligibility criteria, which have been in place since 2013, are being restored. All other eligibility criteria remain unchanged,” reads the official notice.
