The Telangana government has announced special holidays for Intermediate colleges and schools on the occasion of the Sankranti festival. As per the orders, Intermediate colleges will have a six-day holiday from January 11 to January 16.

For schools, a seven-day holiday has been declared from January 11 to January 17. Sankranti is a prominent festival in South India, known for its cultural significance.

According to the Secretary of the BIE, the holidays will apply to all government and private institutions, including both aided and unaided schools, residential schools, social welfare and tribal welfare schools, model schools, BC welfare schools, junior colleges, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, and composite degree colleges offering the two-year Intermediate course.

In a statement released on Tuesday, TG BIE instructed all principals to strictly follow the holiday schedule. The Board specifically directed private unaided junior colleges not to conduct any classes during this period.

TG BIE has warned that any violation of these instructions will be taken seriously, with potential actions including disaffiliation against non-compliant management.

Sankranti, also known as “Makara Sankranti,” is a major festival celebrated in Telangana and other parts of South India. It marks the transition of the sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara) and is considered an auspicious day in Hindu tradition.

Sankranti signifies the end of winter and the beginning of the harvest season. It is celebrated with much enthusiasm, especially in rural areas, where people express gratitude for the agricultural harvest.

In Telangana, the festival is celebrated with various traditional customs such as flying kites, cooking special foods like “Pongal” (a sweet dish made from rice, jaggery, and other ingredients), and participating in community events.

“Bhogi,” the day before Sankranti, is also celebrated with bonfires to mark the end of old possessions and start fresh.
