Free meals in NY schools: New York Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed the initiative to provide free breakfast and lunch to over 2.7 million students across the state, aiming to combat food insecurity and support families facing economic hardships.
In her announcement on Friday, the Governor emphasized the moral and practical imperative of the plan, saying, “In the wealthiest country in the world, this can no longer be tolerated. Not in America and definitely not in the great state of New York.” According to a CBS report, her proposal will be formally presented during next week’s State of the State Address.
New policy will end income requirements
The governor’s plan would eliminate income-based eligibility for free school meals, ensuring that every child, regardless of financial background, receives the nourishment they need to succeed. “The data is clear,” Hochul stated. “Students perform better with full bellies. Food insecurity affects their health, their academic performance, and their future prospects.” According to the CBS report, research supports her claims, showing that food-insecure children are more likely to develop chronic health issues like heart disease and score lower on standardized tests.
Financial relief for families
Hochul also highlighted the economic benefits of the proposal. By covering the cost of school meals, families could save an estimated $160 per month per child—amounting to approximately $2,000 annually for each student. In challenging economic times, such savings would be a significant relief for many parents.
Joining the ranks: States with universal school meals
If implemented, New York would become the ninth state to adopt universal free school meals, joining California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Mexico, Vermont, and Washington. Notably, New York City, the nation’s largest school district, already offers free meals to students, providing a successful model for the statewide expansion.
