Schools in Tennessee remain closed on Monday, January 13, 2025, as snow and ice persist in parts of the Midstate following Friday’s winter storm, according to a report by WSMV News. Earlier, on January 10, a powerful winter storm named Cora swept across the Southern United States, causing widespread disruptions and forcing schools and government offices to shut down from Texas to Virginia. With temperatures plunging and snow, sleet, and freezing rain blanketing the region, nearly 1.5 million students were kept home as districts struggled to ensure safety amid hazardous conditions.
On January 9, freezing temperatures and treacherous roads continued to impact students in states such as Texas, Arkansas, and Virginia. Many school districts responded by canceling in-person classes or transitioning to online learning to accommodate students at home, according to the Associated Press.
While warmer temperatures on Sunday allowed for some snow to melt in various areas of Tennessee, cold weather persists at the start of the week. Daytime highs are expected to rise above freezing, but overnight lows will continue to drop below freezing, posing risks of icy patches forming on roads and walkways during the night.
