The Delhi High Court on Tuesday refused to hear a request to conduct the NEET (UG) exam twice a year, similar to the JEE exam for engineering admissions.

A bench led by Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela stated that deciding how often an exam is held is a policy matter and falls under the government’s authority, not the court’s.

“It is for the authorities to consider the prayer. That’s a policy decision by the government,” it said.

The court dismissed the petition but allowed the petitioner, a coaching centre teacher, to submit a request to the concerned authorities. It also directed that if such a request is made, the authorities should consider it and take appropriate action as per the law.

The petitioner argued that JEE (Mains) is conducted multiple times, giving students more chances to improve their scores and reducing stress. In contrast, NEET (UG) is held only once a year, which should be changed to give medical aspirants more opportunities.

However, the bench pointed out that many other competitive exams also allow only a single attempt.
