Rajya Sabha member Sudha Murty proposed new training courses and exams for teachers every three years to enhance education quality.

Rajya Sabha member Sudha Murty on Tuesday advocated for the introduction of new training courses and regular examinations for teachers every three years, particularly for those teaching at the primary level. During a discussion on the operations of the Ministry of Education, Murty emphasised the pivotal role teachers play in the education system. She stressed that the system would not improve without qualified and capable teachers.

“Teachers, once they pass the exam, BA, or MA, or even PhD at a college level, they enter into the system and afterwards, there are no exams until they retire. This should not happen. Every three years, they should have a new technique or new knowledge examination should be there. Otherwise, they will not improve,” Murty remarked.

“Excellent school premises, all those things you can do, but if you don’t have a good teacher, it is of no use. Teachers play an important role in the education system, not only by their qualification but by their methodology of teaching, convincing, becoming friendly, at times strict, many times, you know, very soft. It’s an art,” Murty added.

Murty noted that while there are various training sessions for teachers, there are no examinations associated with them.

“Every three years, a teacher has to appear for an examination with a different learning technology. Because technology changes. Nothing is free in life except for mother’s love. Everything has a price. If you want to be a good teacher, there is a price for that. The price is not money, but good training and an examination for the teachers,” she added.

Fauzia Khan, a member of NCP-SCP, backed Murty’s proposal for periodic teacher training and examinations. Khan also criticized the gap between the government’s promises and actions, particularly in the education sector.

She pointed out that the National Education Policy envisions 6% of GDP to be spent on education, but the government has consistently reduced the Ministry’s budget from 3.8% in 2015-16 to 2.5% by 2025-26.

Khan further highlighted the lack of clear funding for early childhood education and the troubling fact that three lakh schools remain ungoverned across the country. She also noted the government’s failure to allocate adequate resources for setting up world-class educational institutions, as evidenced by a 73% budget reduction.
