In a move aimed at reducing student stress and enhancing assessment quality, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum committee has given the green light for calculators to be used in Class 12 Accountancy exams. The decision, made last November, now awaits final ratification from the board’s apex governing body.

Currently, only students with special needs are permitted to use calculators during board exams. This initiative seeks to align CBSE with international standards and the National Education Policy (NEP) by lessening the burden on students.

The curriculum committee, spearheaded by the CBSE academic department, emphasised that allowing calculators reduces the cognitive load of lengthy calculations, enabling students to focus on critical analysis and case studies.

To ensure a smooth implementation, CBSE will develop and issue comprehensive guidelines outlining the acceptable calculator model for the exams.

During the November meeting, concerns were raised about the potential for similar requests from other subjects. The committee clarified that the decision pertains exclusively to Accountancy, as the subject prioritises logical reasoning and conceptual understanding over the precision of basic mathematical operations.
