Internships have doubled in India, according to data shared by jobs platform Indeed. India has seen a staggering 103 per cent increase in internship postings over the past three years (Feb 2022–Feb 2025), the report added.
In just the past year, internship postings have jumped by 23 per cent. Delhi, Karnataka, and Maharashtra lead the pack when it comes to internship searches, accounting for 7.2 per cent, 6.8 per cent, and 6.2 per cent of total searches, respectively, the data revealed.
Communication skills most preferred
Communication skills is the topmost preference for employers at 31.99 per cent when looking for interns followed by English proficiency at 12 per cent, Keyword research and Analytical skills each 9 per cent, SEO expertise, and Microsoft Excel each 8 per cent.
Apart from this, Python programming (7 per cent), Microsoft Office proficiency (7 per cent), HTML, and JavaScript (6 per cent each) continue to be valuable, reflecting the growing demand for digital and web development skills, the report added.
Average stipend Rs 25000
The data added that the average internship stipend in India stands at Rs 25,432 per month, but cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, and Gurgaon offer stipends above this national average. While cities like Chennai and Kolkata offer below-average stipend.
Furthermore, some of the popular benefits that several companies are offering the candidates include work-from-home options, flexible schedules, health insurance coverage, paid sick time and cell phone reimbursements, the report stated.
Last week, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman encouraged more companies to participate in the PM Internship Scheme (PMIS), emphasising the national interest after the number of candidates accepting internship offers fell short of expectations in the first round.
Few corporate firms have come forward to offer internships to students eligible under the recently launched PMIS, possibly due to a “supply-demand mismatch,” with many applicants needing to acquire the necessary skills for the roles before they can be given the opportunity.
