An esteemed profession in India, teaching offers the chance to shape future generations. After class 12, many students aim to become government teachers but don’t know where to begin. If you’ve completed Class 12th and wish to pursue this profession, here is all you know need to enter the profession including eligibility criteria, courses, and entrance exams to take.
The first step is to clear Class 12th with a minimum of 50 per cent marks. Thereafter, either complete graduation or enroll in a teacher training programme.
Eligibility Criteria Needed To Become A Teacher
After passing class 12, here is what you need to do:
Primary Level Teaching (Classes 1-5): A two-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.) or Diploma in Education (D.Ed.) along with 50 per cent marks graduation.
Upper Primary Level Teaching (Classes 6-8): A four-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) or D.El.Ed. and a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with 50 per cent marks. Relaxation is offered to reserved category candidates.
Secondary and Higher Secondary Level Teaching (Classes 9-12): A graduate and a postgraduate degree followed by a Bachelor’s in Education (B.Ed.).
Entrance Exams To Apply For
After completing the teacher training programme, they need to pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), conducted at central and state levels, like CTET, REET, MAHATET, TNTET, UPTET, Bihar STET, etc. These are usually written exams with questions being asked from the classes they have applied to teach.

Usually, all the TET exams consist of two papers — Paper I for Classes 1-5 and Paper II for Classes 6-8. Candidates can opt for both or one paper. After clearing TET, apply for government teaching jobs through education board notifications. The recruitment process includes an interview round followed by document verification.
Types of teaching jobs
Primary Teacher (PRT): These educators teach grades 1 through 5. Their responsibilities include delivering the curriculum across all subjects, fostering a healthy learning environment, and monitoring student progress.
Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT): TGT teachers handle classes 6 to 8. They are tasked with developing and delivering curricula, introducing various teaching methods, and encouraging creative expression among students.
Post Graduate Teacher (PGT): PGT teachers instruct students in classes 9 to 12. They prepare students for board and entrance examinations and specialize in teaching higher secondary courses.
Education Consultant: Individuals who have passed the CTET or any TET exam and have experience in special education, curriculum development, or educational evaluation can work as education consultants, advising educational institutions and schools.
Teacher Trainer: Experienced teachers who have cleared the TET can enroll in training programs to become teacher trainers, where they will instruct TET candidates on subject knowledge and teaching methods.
Educational Content Creator: Those proficient in creating engaging and educational content can develop materials for textbooks, e-learning platforms, or ed-tech applications.
