Bihar’s Raj Krishna Jha adopted an unconventional approach to prepare for the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE). Instead of relying solely on traditional methods, he integrated artificial intelligence into his study routine. The 27-year-old said he took the help of ChatGPT to enhance his essay-writing skills for the Mains examination.
Sharing his experience with indianexpress.com, Jha explained, “I wrote essays for Mains as it is one of the deciders of the exam. I used to take a quote and write whatever came to my mind to support it, and then ask AI to review it. I took help from it for some 40-50 essays. After some time, it became my hobby to chat with AI for my essay preparation.”
By combining AI tools with his preparation, Jha was able to refine his writing and gain new perspectives, ultimately contributing to his success in the examination.

UPSC CSE: Managing preparation with full-time job
Jha is working in Kolhapur as an assistant manager for HPCL’s City Gas Distribution (CGD). With an experience of over 7 years, juggling between UPSC preparation with a regular job was not easy. “Every day, I used to study for 3-4 hours after returning from the office. Before the exam, I took a one-month leave from the office for my preparation and gave my best that I could. However, most preparation was done during my week-offs. On Sunday, I used to devote 12-14 hours and solve various mock tests. Revision and consistency played a major role in this CSE journey.” said Jha who called long walks and coffee breaks as his stress busters that could refresh his mind.
Keeping his study materials and resources limited remains a success mantra for Raj. “Know your limits and stick to what you are good at,” said he. Jha enrolled in PWOnlyIAS for mentorship.
