The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar, one of the 23 IITs in India, offers a diverse range of academic programmes through its 13 departments and seven centres. IIT Gandhinagar provides undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and non-degree programmes, including BTech, MTech, MSc, MA, and PhD courses.
This year, under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings, 2024, released by the Union Ministry of Education, IIT Gandhinagar, the tech institute was ranked at the 18th spot under the engineering category and that too with a score of 63.42. Here’s a look at how the Institute ranked in last five years.

The NIRF ranking trends for IIT Gandhinagar over the past five years show a dynamic pattern across categories. In the overall category, the institute has seen fluctuations — from being ranked 35th in 2020, it improved to 33rd in 2021, then dropped to 37th in 2022, before rising to 24th in 2023, however, it slightly dipped to 29th in 2024.
Meanwhile, in the engineering category, the Gandhinagar-based institute maintained a relatively stable presence. It consistently held the 24th position from 2020 to 2021, improved to 22nd in 2022, then slightly declined to 23rd in 2023, and made a notable jump to 18th in 2024.
For the research category, introduced after 2020, the institute initially ranked 39th in 2021, improved to 34th in 2022, and then to 31st in 2023. However, it dropped slightly to 32nd in 2024.

Admission to its BTech programmes is based on candidates’ performance in the JEE Advanced. IIT Gandhinagar offers a four-year BTech degree in disciplines such as Artificial Intelligence, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
In addition, the institute provides integrated BTech–MTech dual degree options in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, allowing students to pursue advanced specialisations within an extended academic framework.
Moreover, established in 2008, the institute is located on the banks of the river Sabarmati in Palaj, Gandhinagar, Gujarat. It is India’s first five-star GRIHA LD (green) campus for minimising negative impact on the environment
