The Ministry of Education has notified that the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has been designated as the national coordinator for Institutions of National Importance (INIs) on the SWAYAM platform. The decision was approved during the 26th meeting of the SWAYAM Board. Dr Ashutosh Mohan of the Banaras Hindu University’s Institute of Management Studies, has been designated as the national coordinator for SWAYAM.
The University will now oversee the development and quality of online courses developed by more than 160 Institutes of National Importance (INIs) nationwide, including Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and Central Universities.
According to a statement from the University, Dr Mohan said he will “ensure that online education delivered by India’s most prestigious institutions meets global benchmarks in quality, accessibility, and relevance.”
“We are committed to enhancing the user experience, enabling smoother academic credit transfers, and streamlining the course lifecycle in full alignment with the 2024 SWAYAM Guidelines,” he added.
Prof Sanjay Kumar, rector and acting vice-chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University, congratulated the university’s SWAYAM team and assured all possible support and coordination to set the BHU as benchmark on the platform.
BHU’s responsibilities will include providing academic and administrative support to INIs, guiding institutions on compliance with SWAYAM 2024 guidelines, avoiding duplication of content and ensuring curriculum relevance.
The varsity will also streamline assessment and certification standards in collaboration with regulatory bodies, and ensure credit transfer and UGC, NTA-compliant certification post-examinations.

BHU has been active on the SWAYAM platform, with 37 courses developed and another 63 scheduled for release by July 2025. The institution is also equipped with a dedicated digital studio for content creation, according to a statement from the university.
With this appointment, BHU becomes part of a handful number of national coordinators on the SWAYAM platform, joining nine other premier institutions such as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), University Grants Commission (UGC), NPTEL–IIT Madras, NCERT, NIOS, IIM Bangalore, and IGNOU.
