Five Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are set to get an infrastructure boost along with more seats and faculty positions with the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approving their expansion on Wednesday.
The student strength at IIT Tirupati, IIT Palakkad, IIT Bhilai, IIT Jammu, and IIT Dharwad, will be increased by a total figure of more than 6500 over the next four years — an addition of 1364 students in the first year, 1738 students in the second year, 1767 students in the third year and 1707 students in the fourth year. This increase will be across undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes, and will take the total student strength at these five IITs from 7111 to 13,687.
The announcement of 6500 additional seats at five IITs was made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget speech in February.
The creation of 130 new posts for professors has also been approved for these five IITs.
A total cost of Rs 11,828.79 crore was approved for the expansion over the next four years, till 2028-29. This will also include infrastructure projects along with research parks.
These five IITs are third generation IITs, which means that they were set up after 2014. While they began operating out of temporary premises, permanent campuses were set up over the past few years. The construction is done in phases with the initial phase focusing on a set of academic buildings, hostels and labs, and subsequent ones meant to focus on more such facilities, along with research parks, sports facilities, and guest houses. Phase-B construction of these five IITs was approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday, a press note said.
