Pursuing an MBA is not just about academics; it’s about fully engaging in everything the program has to offer.

Looking back ten years after graduating from Darden, I can confidently say that the experiences outside the classroom were just as transformative as the coursework. Here are seven keyways to immerse yourself in your MBA journey.

1. Build relationships with classmates beyond academics

Your peers will be your lifelong network, so investing in relationships outside of the classroom is crucial. Whether it was weekend hikes, startup brainstorming sessions, or late-night case discussions, some of my most valuable connections were formed through informal interactions. The MBA journey is intense, and building strong friendships makes the experience more meaningful and enjoyable.

2. Take on leadership roles

An MBA program is the perfect environment to develop leadership skills in a low-risk setting. I took on leadership positions within student clubs and organized events, which helped me refine my ability to manage teams and make strategic decisions. These experiences translated directly into my post-MBA career, making me a more confident and capable leader.

3. Join clubs and participate in experiences

MBA programs have a wide range of student-run clubs, from professional associations to sports and social groups. I joined as VP of the community consulting club, which provided access to case prep sessions, industry leaders, and networking events. At the same time, participating in cultural clubs introduced me to new perspectives and friendships that lasted long after graduation. The more you engage, the more you get out of your MBA experience.

4. Use the facilities on campus

Business schools invest heavily in world-class facilities, and it’s easy to take them for granted. I made full use of Darden’s libraries, fitness center, and collaborative study spaces. These resources not only enhanced my learning experience but also provided a great environment to relax, exercise, and connect with classmates outside of class hours.

5. Celebrate local festivities and regional charm

For international students, studying in the U.S. is not just about academics but also about experiencing cultural traditions. I made it a point to participate in Thanksgiving dinners hosted by classmates and faculty. Similarly, celebrating Christmas with friends from diverse backgrounds made the experience richer. Immersing yourself in local traditions helps you bond with your peers and understand different cultural perspectives.

6. Professors’ home dinners and lunches

One of the most unique aspects of my MBA experience at Darden was the opportunity to have meals at professors’ homes. These informal gatherings allowed for deeper conversations beyond the classroom, where we discussed industry trends, leadership challenges, and even personal career goals. Engaging with faculty outside of structured lectures helped me build strong relationships and gain mentorship that lasted well beyond my MBA years.

7. Travel as much as you can

Whether it was study abroad programs, global consulting projects, or even impromptu road trips with classmates, travel was an integral part of my MBA experience. Business schools offer numerous opportunities to explore different countries, industries, and markets. At Darden, I took part in a global immersion course that allowed me to interact with business leaders in emerging markets, broadening my understanding of global business. 

For me, Darden’s immersive culture is what made it stand out. The close-knit community, the rigorous case method, and the emphasis on leadership development ensure that students are deeply engaged from day one. The small class size fosters genuine relationships, and the accessibility of professors creates an unparalleled learning experience.
