Several Indian universities, including national institutes, are suspending or terminating academic ties with various Turkish universities. The decisions come amid escalating geopolitical tensions involving Turkey. On May 17, IIT Bombay announced via X (formerly Twitter) that it is in the process of suspending all its agreements with Turkish institutions “until further notice.”

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee on May 16 cancelled its memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Inonu University, Turkey. The agreement laid the terms for academic and research collaborations, including student and faculty exchanges between the two institutes. In a formal statement, IIT Roorkee emphasised that its international engagements will continue to be guided by “national interest” and strategic academic alignment.
In the wake of Operation Sindoor, the past few days have seen a growing clamour against India’s associations with Turkey. Apart from Ankara’s open support for Islamabad amid the India-Pakistan military conflagration, widespread use of Turkish drones by Pakistan in operations against India has added to the disapproval for Turkey in India.

–Jawaharlal Nehru University
–Jamia Millia Islamia
–Kanpur University has withdrawn its MoU with Istanbul University
–Chandigarh University also cut its ties with 23 Turkish and Azerbaijani varsities
–Hyderabad’s Maulana Azad National Urdu University also cancelled its MoU
–The University of Delhi is also reviewing its international academic partnerships.
“We are examining all the MoUs, and we will take a decision only after reviewing the agreements,” a senior DU official told news agency PTI.

Not only Indian educational institutions, but also traders have taken a firm stand against countries that extended support to Pakistan during the recent conflict between the two countries. The traders in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior have decided to boycott any form of trade relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan.
The Bangalore Wholesale Cloth Merchants’ Association (BWCMA) has announced that it will cease all textile trade with Turkey and Azerbaijan with immediate effect. The trade suspension will continue until further notice, and the Association’s governing body will announce any changes.
