In 2025, 979 posts, are on offer for roles in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Postal Service (Group A),  Indian Railway Protection Force Service (Group A), etc. In 2024, a total of 1,129 vacancies were filled, including 180 posts in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), 55 in the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and 147 in the Indian Police Service (IPS).

A candidate, whose photograph on the UPSC CSE prelims hall ticket is not clear or the photograph is without the name and date of photograph, will have to bring a photo identity card alongwith two passport size photographs with his/her name and date of photograph, one for each session for appearing in the examination with an undertaking.

The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is conducted to test the eligibility of aspirants admitted into the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other Grade A and B posts in the central government and its departments. 

The eligibility test is conducted in three stages including prelims, mains and the interview test.  The Main exam is descriptive in nature and will be preceded by an interview round to test the candidate’s personality.
