Kerala Rains: Schools To Remain Closed Across 10 Districts Today Due To Heavy Rainfall

Kerala Rain Alert: Schools in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts will remain closed today.

The Central Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in 11 districts as heavy rains continue in Kerala. Red alert has been issued in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts today. The districts are likely to receive very heavy rains. An orange alert has been issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha districts today, meaning there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rains in these areas.

A holiday has been declared for educational institutions in 10 districts due to heavy rains. A holiday has been declared for schools, colleges, and educational institutions in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts today. Collectors have instructed that special classes, including tuition classes, should not be held.

However, examinations and scheduled interviews will proceed as planned, officials clarified, reported PTI.

Kannur University too has postponed all exams scheduled for Monday.

As per instructions issued by the government, those living in areas prone to landslides, landslides and mountain floods in the hilly areas receiving heavy rainfall should move to a safe place. Those living in low-lying areas where waterlogging is common should move to camps prepared after assessing the situation. Whereas those living in unsecured houses and those living in houses with weak roofs should be especially cautious due to the possibility of strong winds. Those who foresee a dangerous situation should contact the authorities and move to safe places as a safety precaution.

In the event of continued heavy rain in districts where red and orange alerts have been declared, relief camps will be set up in advance. The information about the building identified for the relief camp in their area will be announced in advance from the relevant revenue and local authority authorities and a safe route should be understood, the govt has informed.
