A tribal student from Tamil Nadu’s Salem district has made history by securing admission to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) after studying at a government tribal boarding school.
Rajeshwari, from the Kalvarayan Hills and belonging to the tribal community, has achieved a remarkable milestone by clearing the JEE exam. She secured the All India Rank of 417 in the Scheduled Tribe category.
She is the first student from Tamil Nadu to be selected for IIT after studying in a government tribal boarding school, making it a proud moment for her school and community.
Lost Her Father A Year Ago
Rajeshwari’s journey has not been easy. Her father, Andy, a tailor by profession, supported the education of his first two daughters. Unfortunately, he passed away from cancer a year ago. Despite this loss, Rajeshwari remained determined and continued her education with grit and focus. She scored 438 marks in her Class 10 public exams and 521 in her Class 12 board exams.
Teachers believe she has a strong chance of gaining admission to IIT Madras, given her outstanding academic record and ranking.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin congratulated Rajeshwari for her remarkable achievement. Sharing his message on X, the CM wrote, “My salute to the achievement of Rajeshwari, a government boarding school student who, despite losing her father, has carried his dream in her heart and made it come true! I am happy to announce that the government will bear the entire cost of her higher education. It will be a real pride for IIT to see more of our daughters like Rajeshwari joining! Our #DravidianModel government will continue to work towards that.”
