Bhubaneswar: President Droupadi Murmu will attend the second convocation of her alma mater Rama Devi Women’s University Bhubaneswar on February 10. The institution is geared up to welcome the first citizen of the country.
Saumendra Priyadarshi, commissioner of police (Bhubaneswar-Cuttack), said they have received a tentative schedule of the President’s two-day Odisha visit. On the first day, she is scheduled to attend convocation of Rama Devi Women’s University and a function of a city-based organisation. On the second day, she is likely to visit Lingaraj Temple to pay obeisance to the Lord and then attend a programme at the National Rice Research Institute (NRRI) Cuttack.
The women’s university is jubilant about the visit of its alumnus, who is now President of the country. Students, alumni, teachers and staff of the university are getting prepared to welcome Murmu.
“We are excited to welcome the President to our institution for the convocation. She will also give a convocation address. We are holding meetings and discussions to make the convocation memorable,” said Aparajita Chowdhury, vice-chancellor of the university.
Swayam Samparna Kar, Plus III third year student of Sociology department, said they are eagerly waiting to receive the President of India. “We are elated to receive her as a chief guest of our second convocation. She will inaugurate our new auditorium of the university. She is a role model and an inspiration for us,” she added.
Murmu has completed her intermediate and Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Rama Devi Women’s University (erstwhile Rama Devi Women’s College) between 1975 and 1979.
After completing her class X in 1974 from Unit-2 Girls High School here, she took admission as an Intermediate student in the Rama Devi Women’s College next year, that means in 1975. Murmu had lost one year because she was not aware of the admission process. The time she knew about applying for the Intermediate course, the admission process was already over.
When she was the governor of Jharkhand, she had received Doctor of Literature (honoris causa) from this university on the occasion of the institution’s first convocation organised here on March 30, 2019.
