PRAYAGRAJ: Amid stringent anti-copying measures initiated by the UP Secondary Education Board in the ongoing high school and intermediate board examinations, over 1.7 lakh high school students skipped the mathematics papers on Tuesday. Besides, the number of absentees in the second shift, including those for class 12 commerce and home science and class 10 computers, was over 25,000.
The UP Board examinations started on February 16. On the second day, February 17, over 4.5 lakh students had dropped out of Hindi paper of class 10 and 12. Total 22,52,695 candidates had registered for the mathematics examination of class 10, which was held in the first shift of Tuesday. Out of this, 20, 82, 507 appeared which means 1,70,188 candidates did not write the paper, board officials informed TOI.
Similarly, out of 4,25,411 registered candidates in the intermediate and high school exam of second shift, 25,072 remained absent. Thus, the total number of absentees in both shifts (including those of class 10 and 12) stood at 1,95,260.
To conduct the examination in a fair manner, the Board officials remained in constant touch with the officers of the education department across the state from the control room which monitored the centres through CCTV cameras.
“Because of the several steps taken by us to check the menace of cheating, the Board had been successful in tightening the noose around the education mafia. Through the network of CCTV, the government is keeping a close watch on examination centres, centre superintendents and room invigilators,” said secretary, UP Board, Divya Kant Shukla.
The secretary further added that the board monitored 7,083 examination centres during the HS Mathematics paper on Tuesday from the control room. District officials were specially sent to several centres for checking arrangements at night as well. “The process of keeping a watch even at night is continuing from the first day of the examination itself and will continue till the last day,” Shukla added.
“Board’s additional secretary, regional office, is also monitoring the districts of his jurisdiction. So far, FIRs have been registered against 14 solvers across the state for being involved in cheating which also included many impersonators. Similarly, 24 students have been caught copying till date. Of these, there are 16 boys and seven girls in the high school and a lone boy in the intermediate exam,” the secretary said.
The secretary added, “Due to the vigilance of the officers of the department of education, the examination is being conducted in a fair manner as the board is keeping a close vigil at all the sensitive and very sensitive districts.”
According to reports, in the Maths paper on Tuesday, four impersonators were caught in Varanasi and they were being booked.
