PANAJI: The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has said in a new circular that students of Class X and XII who were absent for the first-term exam will be permitted to take the second-term exam as a one-time relief.
The second-term exam is set to begin for Class XII students from March 15. The board said it has been observed that some candidates stayed away from the first-term exams of SSC and HSSC held in November 2022 without offering a justifiable cause.
However, some were absent on medical grounds or due to their participation in national sporting events.
“This matter was extensively deliberated in the examination committee meeting dated March 3, 2023, held at the board’s office,” the board’s circular said. “The decision of the examination committee is that if candidates were absent for the first-term exam for whatever reason, they will be awarded zero marks in the first term. However, they will be permitted to appear in the second-term exam as a one-time measure.”
The Goa board had split the syllabus for Class X and XII into two equal parts, as a special case during the pandemic. The pattern is applicable during the current academic year of 2022-23 as well. In this special evaluation scheme, the board itself conducts both the first- and second-term exams. The results of both term exams and internal marks are combined to derive the final result.
Now, in line with the new decision, if candidates are absent for the second-term exam, they will be treated as absent in that particular subject or subjects and the final result will say ‘needs improvement’.
However, irrespective of the number of subjects in which these candidates have got the ‘needs improvement’ remark, they will be allowed to take the supplementary examination.
“It is also decided that the syllabus for the supplementary examination of SSC/HSSC for June/July 2023 will be the entire syllabus. Further, no marks from first or second term examination will be carried forward in the supplementary exam,” the board said. “The question paper pattern will be a subjective type with weightage to content as per the pattern existing in March 2020.”
This rule of students appearing for the entire syllabus in the supplementary examination will be applicable to all repeater candidates including students who are unsuccessful in the March-April 2023 SSC and HSSC exams.
