Various events, conferences, and activities are organised across the world on World Youth Day to engage young individuals, discuss relevant global issues, and promote youth-led initiatives. Social media also plays an important role in spreading awareness and promoting discussions on this day.
International Youth Day History
Starting in 1965, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) initiated a focused endeavour to influence the younger generation. They sanctioned the Declaration on the Promotion among Youth of the Ideals of Peace, Mutual Respect, and Understanding between Peoples. They commenced giving time and resources to empower young individuals by identifying emerging leaders and furnishing them with resources to address global necessities.
On December 17, 1999, the UNGA endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, and World Youth Day was established. The day was first celebrated on August 12, 2000.
International Youth Day 2023 Theme
This year, the International Youth Day 2023 theme is “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World.” Green skills are “knowledge, abilities, values, and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society,” mentioned United Nations (UN).
International Youth Day 2023 Significance
World Youth Day highlights the global struggles that are faced by young people. This endeavour also seeks to recognise the role of youths in advancing society, spurring economic progress, and encouraging sustainable development.
