Two separate incidents at Delhi University escalated tensions as ABVP protested Rahul Gandhi’s campus visit and cow dung was smeared on the DUSU President’s office.
DU: ABVP protested Rahul Gandhi’s visit, while separately, cow dung was smeared on the DUSU President’s office.
Two incidents at Delhi University’s North Campus on Monday have sparked political tensions, following Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s unexpected visit to the campus last week. On Monday, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organised a protest march, accusing Gandhi of violating university protocol by visiting without prior permission. Separately, a video surfaced showing ABVP leader and former Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) presidential candidate Rishabh Chaudhary smearing cow dung on the office of the DUSU President.
ABVP Protests After Rahul Gandhi’s Visit
The ABVP held a protest march under the banner ‘Chhatra Samman Yatra’ on Monday, starting from Kirori Mal College and concluding at the DUSU office. The protest was organised days after Rahul Gandhi visited the university, which, according to officials, was unapproved and disrupted routine administrative work. The Proctor’s Office stated, “This is the second time Mr Gandhi has done this.”
During the visit, ABVP alleged that members of Congress’s student wing, the NSUI, misbehaved with DUSU Secretary Mitravinda Karnwal and locked students inside her office. ABVP condemned these actions, describing them as “disrespectful and anti-woman” and calling for strict accountability.
Protesters also burnt an effigy of Rahul Gandhi near the DUSU office, accusing him of political opportunism and disruption.
DUSU Secretary Mitravinda Karnwal condemned the behaviour as “an attack on democratic values and student dignity.”
She said, “The incident on 22 May is not just personal for me but concerns the dignity of every female student. Despite being an elected representative, the way I was treated is a direct assault on democracy. This incident exposes the mindset of Congress and NSUI, which shows no respect for women’s leadership or democratic principles. Our ‘Chhatra Samman Yatra’ today was organised to send a clear message that we are always committed to protecting the dignity of female students.”
DUSU President Fires Back At ABVP’s Claims Over Rahul Gandhi’s DU Visit
Responding to ABVP’s accusations, the DUSU president made a strong statement on X. He said that on May 22, Rahul Gandhi visited Delhi University to hear the concerns of SC, ST, OBC, and EWS students. Soon after, the Council and the Sangh started spreading false rumours against him on campus.
Khatri directly challenged the ABVP, saying, “If the Sangh really allows raising the voice of the Dalits, the deprived and the exploited, then you too come forward and talk about the rights of the students but I am sure that you will never get this permission. I still hope that you will do some positive work in the interest of Dalit, oppressed and deprived students.”
Cow Dung Smearing On DUSU Office
In a separate but related incident that happened later today, ABVP leader and former DUSU presidential candidate Rishabh Chaudhary posted a video on Instagram showing him smearing cow dung on the nameplate and door of DUSU President Raunak Khatri’s office.
Chaudhary stated that this was a direct response to Khatri’s earlier action of smearing cow dung in the office of a college principal. That earlier act had itself sparked controversy after a viral video showed the Lakshmibai College principal applying cow dung to classroom walls as part of a research experiment.
