Bhubaneswar: The higher education department on Friday asked around 250 higher education institutions (HEIs) providing self-financing courses in the state to apply for registration on the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) portal. These institutions do not have AISHE code.
The ministry of education has started AISHE in 2010-11 to build a robust database and to assess the correct picture of higher education in the country. Official sources said Odisha has 1054 colleges, but the AISHE shows a list of over 800 colleges. Around 250 colleges are yet to update their data to the AISHE portal. As a result of which they do not have AISHE code.
A senior officer of the department said the state’s gross enrolment ratio (GER) will be calculated using data uploaded by the HEIs on AISHE portal. “Because of fewer colleges registered on the AISHE portal, the number of students is also decreasing. Our ranking is also not going up,” he added.
He said students need AISHE code of a college while applying for fellowship under various fellowship schemes of the Centre. “Students of these 250 colleges will not get Central fellowships due to the fault of their institution,” he added.
Experts said uploading of data on AISHE portal is critical because the National Assessment and Accreditation Council’s (NAAC) grade depends on AISHE’s report. “NAAC grade is important for receiving funds from the Centre. Hence, data upload on AISHE portal has connection with NAAC grade and Central fund,” said a college principal.
Rajat Kumar Mansingh, deputy director, performance tracking cell (PTC), higher education department, said, “It is a matter of concern and the government has decided not to allow those HEIs to take students from the upcoming academic session 2023-24 along with their permission and recognition will be withdrawn.”
The department has urged its regional directors of education at Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Sambalpur, Balasore and Jeypore to enquire into this matter and instruct the HEIs running under their jurisdiction without AISHE code to register their institution within 15 days according to the guidelines of AISHE to obtain the required code.
