NEW DELHI: The Assam government has announced a new dress code for teachers of higher educational institutes in the state. The BJP-led state government has released a notification regarding the dress code, asking teachers in HEIs to not wear casual clothes such as T-shirts, jeans, and leggings while they are on duty.
As per the official notification of the government, teachers will no longer be permitted to attend duties in casual attires. Only formal and traditional dresses will be allowed.
“It has come to the notice of the undersigned that some teachers of the Higher Education Department are found in the habit of wearing the dress of their choice which does not appear to be acceptable by the public at large,” a notification released by the Assam higher education department reads.
The dress codes for male and female teachers are as follows;
For male teachers
► Formal shirts and trousers, or dhoti-payjama
► No jeans, leggings, T-shirts, shorts, or other casual clothing
For female teachers
► “Decent” salwar suit/saree/mekhela-chador, and other traditional attires
► No jeans, leggings, T-shirts, shorts, or other casual clothing
The Assam government has taken this move to promote a “sense of decorum, decency, professionalism, and seriousness of purpose at the workplace.”
“Since a teacher is expected to be an example of all sorts of decency, especially while discharging their duties, it has become necessary to follow a dress code that should reflect a sense of decorum, decency, professionalism and seriousness of purpose at the workplace,” the notification added.
Both female and male teachers have also been advised to dress up in clean and decent clothes in sober colours, which should not look flashy. They have been asked to avoid casual and party wears.
