A staggering 1,000 colleges in West Bengal lack NAAC accreditation, the Centre revealed in Parliament on Wednesday in response to an unstarred question—a fact that may put the state government in an embarrassing position.
West Bengal has 1,514 colleges and 58 universities. However, only 514 colleges and 20 universities have received accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). In other words, 1,000 colleges and 38 universities are operating without NAAC recognition. BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya, who raised the question, claims this raises serious concerns about the quality of higher education in the state.
“NAAC accreditation is crucial for ensuring quality education, funding opportunities, and student benefits. The Ministry of Education has even waived NAAC fees for government colleges and conducted special workshops to assist institutions in applying. Despite these efforts, why are so many colleges still unaccredited? Students deserve better! We urge the state government and educational institutions to take immediate action to improve academic standards,” said the BJP MP.
Education has not been a strong suit for the West Bengal government. The state has been rocked by alleged teacher recruitment scams and multiple protests.
Coincidentally, Bhattacharya’s question was answered by Union Minister of State for Education Dr Sukanta Majumdar, who is also the Bengal BJP President. Immediately after responding to the Rajya Sabha MP’s question, Majumdar took to social media to lash out at the TMC government, stating, “The TMC govt’s negligence is ruining the future of millions of students in WB.”
