As the academic calendar transitions from March to April, a flurry of activity begins among students who have just completed their Class 12 board examinations. With the race for university admissions gaining momentum, a critical advisory has emerged from the University Grants Commission (UGC) that could save many students from a costly mistake.

The UGC has once again released a list of 20 institutions across the country that it has identified as “fake universities”, with a startling eight of them operating out of Delhi. These unrecognised institutions continue to deceive unsuspecting students each year, offering degrees that hold no official value and trapping families into paying substantial fees for worthless credentials.

The UGC has urged all students eyeing admission to any university, especially in Delhi, to consult the list of fake universities available on its official website (ugc.gov.in) before proceeding. It is imperative that students verify the authenticity of the institution they are applying to, a senior UGC official said, emphasising that the UGC has repeatedly cautioned students not to fall into the trap of fraudulent universities.

List of ‘fake universities’ in Delhi:

  1. All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Sciences
  2. Commercial University Ltd, Daryaganj
  3. United Nations University
  4. Vocational University
  5. ADR-Centric Juridical University (ADR House, Gopala Tower, Rajendra Place)
  6. Indian Institute of Science and Engineering
  7. Vishwakarma Vocational University for Self-Employment
  8. Aadhyaatmik Vishwavidyalaya (Spiritual University)

Contact numbers of these universities listed on various platforms, including Google, are either switched off or remain unanswered. In many cases, even operational landline connections lead to dead ends, with no officials responding or providing clarification about admission procedures.

This silence further reinforces the UGC’s warning: if a university cannot be reached for basic information, it likely does not meet the minimum standards of credibility or legitimacy. Moreover, none of these institutions have been granted the authority to confer degrees, a fundamental requirement for any recognised university under the UGC Act.

Every year, hundreds of students fall victim to these unscrupulous entities, drawn in by misleading websites, false affiliations, and aggressive marketing. The emotional and financial toll can be devastating.

The UGC has made it easier for students and parents to access reliable information. A dedicated section titled “Fake Universities” is prominently featured on the commission’s website, where the latest list can be downloaded. Officials advice all prospective applicants to refer to this document before submitting any forms or paying fees.
