Summary of Madam Rides the Bus
The story is about a girl named Valliammai, aka Valli, and her curiosity about exploring new things and knowing about new people. She lived in a house near the corner of the street and had no one of her age to play around. So, her part-time would be to stand at the front gate of the house and watch people on the street. Out of everything that she enjoyed watching on the street, a bus traveling from her hometown to a village nearby was her favorite thing to do. She desperately wanted to take a ride on the bus and see what the new city would look like. She often thought that if the bus driver was her friend and explained to her about the new city, she would shout ‘Proud, Proud’. She and her friends had no idea about what the word meant but they frequently used it as a slang for showcasing sad disapproval towards anything.
Valli would often ask questions related to the bus journey and listen carefully to the people describing their journey, to collect all the information related to the trip that she could. Once, a well-dressed man told her that the bus journey costs only 30 paise which is nothing. But, for someone like her who would see that amount in months, it seemed like a fortune. She came to know that the town was 6 miles away from her place and it takes 45 minutes to reach there. So, she started calculating if she took 1 PM bus and reached there by 1:45, she could go back home by 2:45.
One fine spring morning Valli decided to travel in the bus and stopped it with her cute little voice and hands, as the bus was about to leave. Throughout her journey, she joked with the conductor and vice versa. As she was observing the new shiny bus and the scenery outside while standing, an old man who was concerned about her asked her to sit down. The conductor insisted on the same to ensure that she did not fall off her seat. After a few moments, some more people got onto the bus among which a grandma insisted on talking with Valli. The lady asked her if she knew where she had to go in the new town as she was very small and was traveling alone. Valli did not find it appropriate to mingle with the lady and hence replied that she could take care of herself.
As they traveled towards the new town, she saw a cow running in front of the bus. The driver would press the horn and the cow would get more frightened by the sound and run fast in front of the bus. Finally, cow to the edge of the road leaving enough space for the bus to go ahead. Soon, they reached the town. Everyone got off the bus except for Valli. The conductor asked her to go and have a look at the beautiful streets but she said that she wanted a return ticket for the same bus. The conductor insisted her on enjoying herself and getting a drink for herself but Valli said that she did not have enough money for the same. He said that he would get her a drink and it would be a treat for her but she declined.
Then, the bus was returning back to the town. Valli still enjoyed every sight with the same enthusiasm but she saw a dead cow lying on the road. She confirmed with the conductor that the cow was the one she had seen earlier while traveling to the new town. She became utterly sad and did not want to look outside the town post that incident. She finally reached her place, bid goodbye to the conductor, and came back home without her mother getting to know about anything that happened that day.
