The story is about a secret agent Ausable and his witty style of dealing with difficult situations. One day, as he was entering his hotel room with his friend Fowler, they were interrupted by a midnight visitor with a gun in his hand. Read the summary below to know what happened next.

 Summary of The Midnight Visitor

A secret agent Ausable was talking to his writer friend Fowler. They decided to spend an evening together. During their meeting, Fowler realised that Ausable did not have the personality of a secret agent as he was fat and still had his American accent on him despite living in France for the past 20 years. As they were talking, Ausable told his friend that there was an interesting and important report in his room that could change the country’s future.

As they were entering the hotel room, both of them saw a guy named Max in Ausable’s room with a gun in his mind. He was waiting for the papers/reports of missiles that Ausable had. The visitor told them that he was going to wait for the reports and until then they had to behave like hostages. Ausable started talking about the balcony outside his room. Meanwhile, they heard a knock at the hotel room door. All of them suspected it to be the police. The knock kept getting louder and louder.

Max decided to wait outside on the balcony until the police went and jumped out of the window. Ausable opened the door and saw a waiter coming in with wine and glasses that he had ordered. Both of them heard a loud scream outside.

Then Fowler understood the entire plan played by Ausable to trick the midnight visitor. There was no balcony outside and no police at the door. Ausable knew that the waiter would come with wine and he used the situation as an advantage to save himself from the situation. Since, he had developed so much on to the story about the balcony, the visitor without giving a second thought decided to jump from the window and wait there.
