The Directorate of Education (DoE) has issued new admission guidelines for Delhi government-run special schools, covering entry-level classes and classes 1 to 9 and 11. The guidelines, issued in a circular dated March 6, aim to streamline the admission process for students, including those with disabilities, across various class levels.
As per the guidelines, students who have passed the previous class from a recognised school will be admitted directly to classes 6 to 9. However, out-of-school children seeking admission to Class 6 will undergo an assessment to check their basic literacy and numeracy skills. For students applying to classes 7 and 8 who have not studied in a recognised school, an undertaking from their parents will suffice for admission.
Admission to Class 9 is strictly for students who have passed the previous class from a recognised school. Students transferring from feeder schools with valid documents are exempt from the age criterion, with the head of schools having the discretion to grant a six-month age relaxation if requested by parents.
The age limits for admission have been set as per the class levels.
For entry-level classes, the age range is as follows:
Nursery: 3-7 years
Kindergarten: 4-8 years
Class 1: 5-9 years
Class 2: 6-11 years
Class 3: 7-12 years
Class 4: 8-13 years
Class 5: 9-14 years
For mid-level classes, the age limits are:
Class 6: 10-16 years
Class 7: 11-17 years
Class 8: 12-18 years
Class 9: 13-19 years
For Class 11, students must be between 15 and 21 years old. Admission to Class 11 is available to students who have passed the Class 10 examination. Those who completed Class 10 through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) must have at least 50% in five subjects to opt for humanities without skill subjects, and 45% to choose humanities with skill subjects.
DoE Guidelines For Admission To Special Schools
In the case of children with disabilities, additional requirements apply, such as a disability certificate or Unique Disability ID (UDID) card for admission to schools for blind students. Students with intellectual disabilities must fall under moderate to profound disability levels based on IQ scores. The DoE has also specified that hearing-impaired students with severe to profound hearing loss (above 61 dB) will be eligible, but must undergo additional assessments like hearing tests (PTA) and IQ tests.
The guidelines also emphasize priority for students residing in Trans-Yamuna areas due to transport limitations. Students with siblings in government special schools will receive preference, while non-resident students can apply for hostel facilities if seats are available after admitting eligible Delhi-based students.
Delhi Govt Special Schools: Admission Process
All admissions will be conducted online through the official DoE website- edudel.nic.in. The process will be subject to seat availability, and in cases where applications exceed available seats, a draw of lots will be conducted.
The online registration form has been designed in a simple format. It can be filled using a smartphone also. However, if any parent requires support in filling it, he/she can approach the Help Desk at the nearest special school. The desk will also assist the parents in filling up and submitting online forms.
