They also clam up during discussions or arguments because they don’t want others to get upset at them for their suggestions or positions. You also take on many responsibilities, even if you can’t handle them all yourself.
If you are this person, you must change your life because it can destroy your career. But how exactly can it be a dent in your career? Here are three of the most notable impacts of being a people-pleaser in your workplace and things you can do to improve your mindset.
Increases The Chances Of Burnout
The most notable way having a people-pleaser mindset can destroy your career is by increasing your chances of burning out. Burnout occurs when one cannot operate efficiently in the workplace while still being of clear mind and positive energy.
If one is a people-pleaser in the workplace, one tends to focus on decisions that will allow one to extend their importance or value to others even if they are not required. This means that one will take on more tasks even if it will affect one’s overall well-being and responsibilities. Once it piles up, the sense of overwhelm will kick in, eventually leading to burnout.
If you control your people-pleaser mindset, you can say no to these additional responsibilities and secure more time for your true responsibilities. You will also be able to become more mentally and emotionally stable to the point you know exactly how much energy you have left for your other tasks.
High Levels Of Anxiety
When a people-pleaser is unable to provide support to others and everything is not going according to their plans, anxiety will kick in.
Anxiety causes a person to think that they are not enough, causing them to question even their behaviours. If we don’t stop breathing in for a bit, it will be harder to control our emotions and, eventually, disable us from deciding what we can do. It is also hard to keep up with everything around you because you are preoccupied with what you can do next.
An excellent way to counter this anxiety is by giving yourself time to process what is before you and have your emotions under control before acting up. When you do this, you will have a more evident mindset to take in the situation and be calmer.
Unable To Move Forward
Being a people-pleaser can prevent you from moving to your next career step because you are more focused on others than looking at what you can do for yourself. You will also find it hard to speak out about your life goals and request opportunities to help you achieve them.
If you want to break this habit, consider what you are giving up. If you focus more on the opportunities of others and you want to succeed in your career, you need to fight for your goals. You will become more confident about your skills and be able to achieve those goals without having to focus too much on others.
While it is ok to care for others occasionally, it is essential to remember that in work, you also need to focus on your responsibilities and goals. Fortunately, there are ways to combat a people-pleaser mindset, which can improve how you think about yourself. Don’t let it be the reason for your career’s downward spiral, and make an effort to change when you notice that you are relying too much on this unhealthy habit.
