The Delhi University has sanctioned Rs. 110 crore for the expansion of its central library. The construction work is slated to commence soon. This announcement was made by Yogesh Singh, vice chancellor of Delhi University at the launch of the Centenary E-Book Collection and Digital Archive.
The vice chancellor said that a vast change had come in the Delhi University by the rise of e-resources. “Students these days find it very comfortable to read e-books. They prefer to supplement their reading of printed books through the medium of e-books.” He called for a mindset change in the faculty and university administration.
Acknowledging the transformation that the online medium had brought to educational practices, he pointed out that “India has emerged as the leading country in the world in UPI transactions.” He said that the transformation in the libraries was like the transformation in the financial systems. “Today students can access library resources online from anywhere,” he said.
He accepted that many senior members of faculty were not comfortable with the concept of e-journals. “They need to change their mindset,” he said, “because there is no fundamental difference between an e-journal and a printed journal.”
He said that the Delhi University has made financial provisions for e-resources. The Rs. 110 crore sanctioned for expansion would enrich the e-resources of Delhi Library. Rajesh Singh, librarian of Delhi University, pointed out that the resources and services of the Delhi University Library System (DULS) are available in both north and south campuses.
The digital archives of several national and international publishers have been acquired by the Delhi University library.
