Everything You Need To Know About ISRO’s Free Space Programme for Class 9 Students

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has opened registrations for its Young Scientist Programme, YUVIKA 2025, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for school students to gain hands-on exposure to space science and technology.

What is YUVIKA?

YUVIKA (YUva VIgyani KAryakram) is ISRO’s special initiative to nurture young minds in the field of space research. Designed for students currently in Class 9, the programme aims to introduce them to space technology, applications, and trends in a fun and interactive manner. It’s part of ISRO’s mission to ‘Catch Them Young’ and inspire students to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers in the future.

The best part? The entire programme, including lodging, boarding, and study materials, is fully sponsored by ISRO!

Who can apply?

  • Students studying in Class 9 as of 1 January 2025 in any school across India.
  • Selection is based on academic performance and extracurricular activities.
  • Preference is given to students from rural areas.

Important dates to remember

  • The programme was announced on 24 February 2025.
  • Registrations began on 24 February 2025 and will close on 23 March 2025.
  • The first selection list will be released on 7 April 2025.
  • Selected students must report to ISRO centres on 18 May 2025 (or as informed by ISRO).
  • The YUVIKA programme will run from 19 to 30 May 2025.
  • The send-off date for students is 31 May 2025.

How will students be selected?

ISRO will evaluate applications based on the following criteria:

  • Class 8 Marks – 50% weightage
  • Performance in Online Quiz – 10%
  • Participation in Science Fairs (School/District/State/National level in last three years) – 2-10%
  • Rank in Olympiads (School/District/State/National level in last three years) – 2-5%
  • Winners in Sports Competitions (1st to 3rd place at School/District/State/National level in last three years) – 2-5%
  • Participation in Scouts/Guides/NCC/NSS (in last three years) – 5%
  • Studying in a Rural or Panchayat Area School – 15%

Where will the programme take place?

Selected students will get the incredible opportunity to visit one of ISRO’s prestigious centres for the programme. The seven locations include:

  1. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun
  2. Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram
  3. Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota
  4. UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), Bengaluru
  5. Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad
  6. National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Hyderabad
  7. North-Eastern Space Applications Centre (NE-SAC), Shillong

What about travel and expenses?

ISRO will fully cover the cost of lodging, boarding, and study materials. Additionally, travel expenses will be reimbursed as follows:

  • Second AC train fare or AC bus fare (Volvo) from the student’s nearest railway station/bus terminal to the ISRO centre and back.
  • Students must submit original travel tickets to claim reimbursement.
