Like many others who strived in a difficult environment, Jagtar Singh Chaudhry also comes from a humble background. He was born and brought up in Panoh village of Una district, Himachal Pradesh. He was born in the house of a modest farmer named Bhagat Singh Panoh, who later became the village headman. Jagtar completed his primary education from a government school. His village often had no electricity for days at a stretch, and Jagtar often had to study with a candle during his school days. He used to walk 4 km every day to school, as they did not have any mode of transport.

Jagtar Singh Chaudhry received a graduate degree and an MBA from the University of Cincinnati (Ohio). He has an undergraduate degree from Banaras Hindu University. After his marriage, Jagtar relocated to the US with his wife Jyoti. He and his wife both quit their jobs to join SecureIT in 1996. The duo later formed CipherTrust. The very next year, VeriSign and Secure Computing Corporation purchased his company. After that, Jagtar created AirDefense. At IBM, Unisys, and IQ Software, Jagtar worked in sales and marketing for 25 years. He founded the cyber security company Zscaler in 2007, and he has a 42% stake in it.

Jagtar has received awards for being the Entrepreneur of the Year (Southeast USA) from Ernst & Young; Innovator & Influencer from Information Week; Market Entrepreneur from SC Magazine, and Distinguished Alumnus from IIT BHU, and one of the 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs from Goldman Sachs.
