Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary is celebrated on October 2, every year. His influence and contribution to the freedom of this country is something every Indian must remember on this day. Let us take a look at his educational qualifications, and what he did before he embarked on his journey as a social reformer. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, present-day Gujarat. His early education began in his birth city of Porbandar. Contrary to popular belief, Gandhi was an average student and was not involved much in sports either. One of the reports on Mahatma Gandhi mentioned, “He was good at English, fair in Arithmetic and weak in Geography; conduct very good, bad handwriting.” He was considered to be shy, someone who kept to mostly himself.

Gandhiji then moved to Rajkot because of his father’s new job. At the age of 11, he was enrolled in Alfred High School, an all-boys institution. Here he emerged as a good student, excelling in multiple subjects including English. Reports say that his handwriting was something which never improved, which could be because he learned it through writing on the dust. The school was converted into a museum in the year 2017.

At the age of 13, he got married, because of which he was held back a year in high school. He was able to make up for it by working hard in his studies. After completing his high school education, he was admitted to Samaldas Arts College, the only place which was offering a degree in the region during that time. Later he dropped out of college and went back to his family in Porbandar. After a while, he decided to study law. His decision to leave his family was met with criticism, and he was excommunicated from the community. Despite that, he went to the University College London (UCL)in 1888, and completed his law degree in three years.
