Over 9 lakh candidates applied for GATE 2025, and anticipation is high for the final result. IIT Roorkee, the exam’s conducting body, has released the answer key, allowing candidates to submit objections until March 1, 2025. This feedback will be incorporated into the final answer key and result preparation.
GATE 2025 Result Date And Access
As per the official notification, IIT Roorkee will announce the GATE 2025 results on March 19, 2025. Candidates can access their results online at gate2025.iitr.ac.in using their enrolment ID or email ID and password.
How Is the GATE Result Prepared?
The GATE result is determined through a multi-step process:
Raw Marks
The GATE exam, scored out of 100, comprises:
Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs): These carry negative marking as 1/3 mark deducted for a 1-mark question and 2/3 mark deducted for a 2-mark question.
Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions: These do not have negative marking.
Raw marks are calculated based on the number of correct answers provided.
Normalisation Process
To account for variations in difficulty levels across multiple exam sessions, GATE employs a normalisation process. This process uses a formula based on past data and session difficulty to calculate normalised marks.
GATE Score Calculation
Raw marks are converted to a scale of 1,000, known as the GATE score, using the following formula:
M = Candidate’s actual marks
Mq = Qualifying marks (typically 25-30 for the general category)
Mt = Average marks of the top 0.1% of candidates
Sq = 350 (qualifying score)
St = 900 (top score)
All India Rank (AIR)
Based on the normalised score, candidates are assigned an All India Rank (AIR), indicating their position nationwide.
Qualifying Based on Cut-off Marks
Each paper and category has specific cut-off marks. Candidates with marks exceeding the cut-off for their category qualify for GATE and can download their scorecard.
GATE 2025 Cut-off: Expected vs Previous Year
The GATE cut-off is published separately for different categories: General, OBC-NCL/EWS, SC/ST/PwD. While the official GATE 2025 cut-off will be announced with the results on 19 March 2025, the expected cut-off for Computer Science (CS), based on previous trends, is as follows:
GATE Cut-off 2024: (Computer Science)
General: 27.6
OBC-NCL/EWS: 24.8
SC/ST/PwD: 18.4
Expected Cut-off 2025
General: 27-29
OBC-NCL/EWS: 24-26
SC/ST/PwD: 18-20
Factors Affecting GATE Cut-off
Several factors influence the GATE cut-off:
- Difficulty level of the exam
- Number of candidates
- Availability of seats
- Previous years’ trends
Each GATE paper (e.g., ME, EE, CE, EC, etc.) has a different cut-off. For instance, the cut-off for Mechanical Engineering (ME) usually falls between 28-32 (General category).
Post-Result Process
Scorecard Download: The GATE 2025 scorecard will be available for download by the end of March 2025 and will remain valid for three years.
Counselling: Qualified candidates need to participate in COAP (for IITs) or CCMT (for NITs, IIITs) counselling.
