While everyone knows New Delhi as India’s capital, have you ever wondered why it is called ‘Delhi’? Did Delhi or Dilli really get its name because of its warm-hearted people, or does it have a different origin? Here’s the history behind its name.
The city was ruled by the Mughals for centuries and later by the British, yet it was never named after a Mughal emperor or an English officer. So, where did the name actually come from?
There are different theories regarding the origin of the name. According to the most widely accepted one, historians believe that King Dhilu established a city in south-west Delhi around 800 BC. He was also affectionately called Dhillu or Dilu. It is believed that Delhi, or Dilli, was named after him. The area where he founded this city later became the site of Qutub Minar.
Some historians suggest that the Tomar dynasty built Anangpur, incorporating parts of the Delhi Triangle region. Later, this settlement was moved about 10 kilometres ahead and renamed Lal Kot, which remained for nearly a hundred years.
In 1164, Prithviraj Chauhan built several forts in the region, and the city was then known as Qila Rai Pithora. Another theory suggests that the name Delhi comes from ‘Dahli’ or ‘Dehli,’ meaning ‘gateway’ or ‘entrance.’
Indraprastha: The Ancient Name
It is well known that Delhi was once called Indraprastha, a name that still exists in a region of the city. According to Mahabharata tales, the Pandavas built this city with the help of Lord Indra and the divine architect Vishwakarma, following the orders of Lord Krishna. The city was named Indraprastha after Indra.
Following this, Delhi’s recorded history begins with the reign of King Dhilli. Some historians claim the city was originally called ‘Dilhika’, which later evolved into ‘Delhi’.
During the mediaeval period, it was one of the seven largest cities. The English name ‘Delhi’ is also believed to have originated from ‘Dillika’.
