India’s heritage and traditions are renowned for their richness. The prosperity of this land is evident in the fact that the British colonised it for the sole purpose of exploitation. Their 200-year rule left a significant mark on Indian society and culture.

It is a widely acknowledged historical fact that British colonial rule extended across much of the Indian subcontinent for a significant period. This period witnessed instances of hardship and oppression inflicted upon the Indian populace. However, one state in India remained unconquered by the British, defying their attempts at subjugation. The resilience of this state against British imperialism raises questions about the factors that contributed to its ability to withstand British colonial domination.

This state did not lack wealth or beauty; even today, it remains a top choice for tourists drawn to its allure. Goa never succumbed to British rule. The reason for Goa’s exemption from British dominion lies with the Portuguese, who arrived in India in 1498, predating the British. Vasco da Gama’s discovery of India paved the way for Portuguese trade dominance. While numerous conflicts arose between the British and the Portuguese, Goa remained steadfastly outside British control.

The British arrived in Surat, India, in 1608. They engaged in trade, extracting resources and wealth from India to their homeland. Over time, they began to assert control over various parts of the country. However, their colonial rule eventually ended in 1947 when India gained independence.

Goa remained under Portuguese rule even after the rest of India achieved independence. The Portuguese had established their presence in Goa around 400 years earlier and continued to govern it even after the British left India. It was not until 1961 that Portuguese rule in Goa finally came to an end.
