SHIVAMOGGA: A Class X student from a residential school travelled 630km from Shivamogga district to hometown Koppal and back in 12 hours and wrote the English-language examination on Thursday even before she could process the news of her father’s sudden and untimely death.
Arshiya, from Koppal, joined Class X in Indira Gandhi Residential School at Gerupura in Hosanagara taluk of Shivamogga district in 2022. Her father Abid Bhasha Muniyar, 55, died of a heart attack on Wednesday night. Arshiya’s brother contacted school principal Yogesh H Hebbalagere and informed him about the death. Yogesh, who was attending to his ill son in a hospital, told hostel wardens Sunitha and Shanta Naik not to share the tragic news with the student. The principal told Ashriya that her family was expecting her for Ramzan and requested her to pack bags to go to Koppal.
Bereaved girl collapsed
The Class X student should return to the school by morning, he added. Puzzled by the sudden call from home, she left Shivamogga in a cab around 10.30pm accompanied by principal Yogesh, Sunitha and Shanta.
Only after reaching Koppal, 315km away, around 4am did the girl come to know about her father’s death. She was given all of 30 minutes to spend time with her shattered family.
Yogesh told TOI that the girl collapsed on seeing her father’s body. “Later, I requested her brother and sisters to send her back to Shivamogga to attend the exam. Unwilling initially, the family decided to put her studies first,” he said. Later, she watched the final rites through a video call.
The residential school has 49 students in Class X and is run by the backward classes and minorities department.
