Group is a collection of individuals who have regular contact and frequent interaction and who work together to achieve a common set of goals. Discussion is the process whereby two or more people exchange information or ideas in a face-to-face situation to achieve a goal. The goal, or end product, maybe increased knowledge, agreement leading to action, disagreement leading to competition or resolution or perhaps only a clearing of the air or a continuation of the status-quo.

Group Discussion or GD as it’s popularly called is a communication methodology where a group of people known as participants share their opinions and views with the other participants, and collaborate on their shared ideas to work together towards a common objective. A group discussion facilitates the flow of information, questions are raised and answered and analysis of an issue is carried out by a team to figure out a solution. In an interview process with a company, a group discussion is a means to shortlist the probable candidates to a select few.

Group Discussion or GD is a type of discussion that involves people sharing ideas or activities. People in the group discussion are connected with one basic idea. Based on that idea, everyone in the group represents his/her perspective.

The Group Discussion is generally the next level after the entrance exam to pursue a professional degree. In the case of recruitments, Group Discussion can be the starting or at the end, depending on different companies or organizations.

It is not fixed that the group discussion is always performed around the table. People can sit in any arrangement, but everyone should be able to see every face. It is not only the usual discussion, but it is also a discussion with knowledge and facts.

Group Discussion Topics

Group Discussion, popularly labeled as GD, is a popular methodology used by an many organizations (company, institute, business school, etc.) these days to gauge whether the candidate has certain personality traits such as interpersonal communication skills, confidence in public speaking, team spirit, leadership abilities, social behaviour and problem-solving skills. GDs form an important part of the short-listing process for recruitment or admission in a company or institution.

In this methodology, there are usually 7-12 participants in a group. The the group of candidates is given a topic or a situation which could be either factual, abstract or case based, and typically given some time to think and make notes about the same. After this, the group of candidates is, and then asked to discuss it the topic among themselves for a specific duration ranging between 10-40 minutes (which may vary from one organization to another). The Panelists assign scores to every candidate based on his/her individual performance as well as how he performed within the group. It is a systematic exchange of information, views and opinions about a topic, problem, issue or situation among the members of a group who share some common objectives.

A. Prepare well for the topic.

Go through the list of things to avoid so as to crack a GD:
1. Don’t start for the sake of starting. This may project you as an impulsive person with lack of planning and organizing skills, which totally discounts your candidature for a management program.

2. Don’t speak randomly without a plan and structure. This may give an impression to the panel that you are speaking and not adding any value to the discussion.

3. Don’t be arrogant, overaggressive or vain. This may evince a negative attitude with poor interpersonal skills.

4. Don’t show a lack of attention or energy. This may show that you are indifferent to the task at hand. Kindly appreciate that energy is the capacity for doing work and any compromise on adequate energy levels will portray you as someone who is not task driven.

5. Don’t look at only the key speakers in the discussion. It is your responsibility to respect all members of the group. The key speakers should definitely be given more attention, but this should not imply that the passive speakers are totally neglected.

6. Don’t condemn or severely criticize anyone’s view point. Everyone has a right to his/her opinion. It is possible that some members of the group get aggressive while expressing themselves but they need to be managed in a certain other way.

7. Don’t indulge in cross discussions when the main discussion is in progress. This amounts to transgression and does not conform with formal etiquettes.

13. Don’t enter your neighbour’s private space while making a point. This is a violation of his/her intimate space and will be seen as a breach of a code of conduct.

14. Don’t over gesticulate. This may project you as an impulsive person.

15. Don’t scream and shout to prove your point as it negates the importance of poise and composure

A. Communication Skills
All the participants in the Group Discussion present their views on the given topic. The language used should be simple so that everyone present in the discussion can easily understand.

B. Content

G. Behavior issues
Do not suffer from arguing, attitude, and arrogant problems. It always creates a negative impression. Always remember that companies are hiring for the candidates who can handle every situation without misbehaving. Some candidates also argue on an inevitable fact, due to overconfidence that they will be highlighted, which is not true.

H. Research
Some candidates do not know about the company, organization, or institute. Whenever you go for any selection round, always go for research about the company, organization, or institute.

I. Focus on your body gestures
Do not sit randomly in a Group Discussion. The panelists always focus on how you sit and how you react to different situations during the discussion. In a Group Discussion, sit straight, do not lean back on the chair, and don’t play with your pens. Don’t get easily distracted when someone opens the door or comes to discuss anything with the panelists. Do not look back, see here and there to see who is coming in the room or not.
You should avoid other gestures like shaking or swinging legs, yawning, etc. Always dress-up properly for a Group Discussion.

J. Were you active during the discussion?
You should always be attentive during the discussion. Focus on your listening skills.
Sometimes, candidates are not aware about the GD’s topic, because they were not active when the topic was given.
