A significant shift in the education system is set to impact students in Haryana this year, as the state introduces new rules regarding school examinations. Under the revised policy, students in Class 5 and 8 will no longer automatically be promoted if they fail their exams. This marks a major departure from previous practice, where students were advanced to the next grade regardless of their performance in these key years.
The Haryana government confirmed that regular exams will now be conducted for students in both Class 5 and 8. If a student fails these exams, they will not progress to the next grade. Instead, they will have the opportunity to retake the exam within two months. However, to move on to the Class 6 or 9, the student must pass the retake. Failure to do so will result in the student being required to repeat the year.
Historically, the education system in Haryana, along with several other states, operated under a no-fail policy up to Class 8. Students were automatically promoted to the next grade, even if their academic performance was poor. This policy was in line with the Centre’s previous stance of discouraging failure at the elementary level. However, the central government has now revised this approach, and Haryana swiftly implemented these changes in line with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The new guidelines are part of a broader overhaul of the education system, with the aim of ensuring that students meet certain academic standards before advancing to higher levels of education. The Haryana Education Ministry has issued a formal notification outlining the changes, signalling a shift towards more rigorous academic expectations in the state’s schools.
While the new rules are currently enforced in Haryana, other states may follow suit in the near future, as the central government encourages the adoption of this updated approach to school exams. The change is part of the ongoing implementation of the NEP 2020, which aims to transform the education system with an emphasis on holistic development, critical thinking, and accountability.
