The advent of electricity completely changed how humans live. But every coin has two sides. Similarly, electricity became a part of our lives, and we started facing issues in its absence. The frequency and severity of power outages has increased in recent times. As the situation of power cuts have been lingering for years, a game changer from a non-technical background tried to find a solution to this. Kunwer Sachdev is the face of India’s power backup industry and the mind behind Su-Kam Power Systems Ltd, one of the nation’s most innovative and quickly growing companies. Kunwer Sachdev may have revolutionised the power backup industry, but his rise was marred by many hurdles that he had to fight hard to overcome. Let’s take a look at his success story. His father worked as a clerk in the Railways. He grew up in Punjabi Bagh area of Delhi. Kunwer Sachdev completed his primary education from a private school. Later, he had to be shifted to a government school since his parents could not afford a private school’s fees. It was a Hindi medium school.
After earning his undergraduate degree in law from LLB from LAW Center 1 Delhi University in 1984, he began working full-time in his brother’s pen company. Kunwer Sachdev sold pens, by visiting houses door to door, during this period. According to reports, he used to sell pens to help pay for his education. For a brief period, he also worked in the marketing department of a cable communication company.
The idea of starting an inverter company came from the inverter in his house repeatedly breaking down. As a visionary from a young age, Kunwer Sachdev was able to see the possibilities in the field of power backup right away. He decided to launch Su-Kam in 1988 as a result of the difficulties presented by power outages.
Kunwer Sachdev struggled to raise capital for his company, so it was a major setback when customers sent back his first 100 inverters because of problems. He never gave up and made his innovation better than anything else on the market by fixing all the shortcomings. His first clients were his cable TV customers from his previous job. He began seeking dealers and distributors after realising that selling to customers directly would not help him expand his business. Most producers soon understood that Su-Kam was unrivalled in terms of product quality and cost.
Now, Su-Kam is worth Rs 2300 crore. Kunwar Sachdev manufactures numerous solar products, apart from inverters. The solar products made by Su-Kam are extremely popular abroad. According to statistics, the company’s products have been put in more than 1 lakh homes across the nation. Kunwar Sachdev is often referred to as the solar man of India.
