Chartered Accountancy (CA) is a professional field focused on finance, accounting, auditing, taxation and business strategy. Chartered Accountants (CAs) are experts who ensure financial health and compliance for businesses and individuals. They analyse financial data, provide tax advice, audit accounts and help with financial planning and decision-making.
Chartered Accountancy covers several essential domains vital for effective financial management and regulatory compliance. It includes accounting, which entails maintaining precise financial records and preparing comprehensive financial statements.
In the realm of auditing, Chartered Accountants scrutinise financial data to ensure accuracy and conformity with regulatory guidelines. They are pivotal in taxation, offering expert advice on tax laws, minimising tax obligations and ensuring timely tax submissions.
Another key area is financial management, where CAs oversee budgeting, forecasting and risk management to maintain financial stability. Moreover, they ensure businesses adhere to corporate laws, guiding them to comply with legal and regulatory frameworks. Collectively, these roles establish Chartered Accountancy as a cornerstone of financial accountability and strategic business planning.
The CA programme is divided into three stages—CA Foundation, CA Intermediate and CA Final—each designed to provide a deeper understanding of concepts, ranging from foundational accounting principles to advanced topics such as auditing, corporate law and strategic financial management.
CA Foundation
The CA Foundation is the entry-level course for students who have completed their Class 12 education. It introduces the fundamental principles of accounting, business laws, economics and quantitative aptitude. This level aims to build a strong base for aspiring Chartered Accountants by providing a foundational understanding of commerce-related subjects. It is ideal for beginners to get familiarised with the basics of the profession and prepare for the more advanced concepts taught in subsequent levels.
CA Intermediate (Intern)
The CA Intermediate, also referred to as the Intern level, is the second stage, designed for students who have cleared the CA Foundation or are eligible for direct entry through their graduation. This level delves deeper into core subjects such as advanced accounting, corporate laws, taxation and auditing. Split into two groups, it equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to tackle real-world financial challenges. Completion of this level also allows students to commence their articles, a three-year practical training programme under a qualified Chartered Accountant.

CA Final
The CA Final is the last stage and focuses on advanced concepts and specialisation in financial reporting, international taxation, strategic cost management and professional ethics. Students are eligible for this level after completing their CA Intermediate and a minimum of 2.5 years of articleship training. The CA Final prepares students for high-level responsibilities in the financial domain, equipping them with the expertise to handle complex financial decisions and strategic planning. Clearing this stage qualifies individuals as Chartered Accountants, ready to take on diverse roles in industries, businesses, or practice.
