The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) has terminated its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sabancı University, Turkey, with immediate effect, the institute said in a statement on Tuesday. The decision has been taken in view of national interest. All academic collaborations and associated activities under this MoU have been cancelled, the institute added.

“In view of national interest, the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode has unilaterally annulled the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sabancı University, Turkey, with immediate effect,” IIMK said.

“At IIM Kozhikode, we place utmost importance on aligning our global engagements with the national interest. The decision to annul the MoU with Sabancı University has been taken after careful consideration and is in keeping with our institutional responsibility to uphold the values and priorities of our nation. We remain committed to fostering international collaborations that reflect mutual respect, strategic alignment, and shared national values,” Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director IIMK said.

The MoU was signed in 2023 for a period of five years.

This decision has been prompted by Turkey and Azerbaijan’s open support to Pakistan after India’s Operation Sindoor, that was launched to dismantle terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in aftermath of Pahalgam terror attack.

Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab had earlier terminated all MoUs with institutions in Turkiye and Azerbaijan. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Jamia Millia Islamia, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) in Hyderabad, and Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU) in Kanpur also suspended their agreements with Turkiye and Azerbaijan.

MANUU cancelled its MoU with Yunus Emre Institute, Turkiye for a diploma course. While Jamia Millia Islamia had suspended all academic collaborations with institutions affiliated with the government of Turkiye, citing national security concerns. JNU too suspended its MoU with Turkiye’s Inonu University, which was signed earlier this year for faculty and student exchange programmes.
