IISc best in India, Anna University, IIT Indore follow: Times Higher Education Asia Rankings 2025

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has secured the top position in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) Asia Rankings 2025, released on April 23. IISc is ranked 38th in the list. The other Indian institutes in the list include Anna University, ranked 111th, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore, ranked 131st, and Mahatma Gandhi University, ranked 140th.

All the Indian institutes have seen a drop in their rankings as compared to those released in 2024. While IISc, which was ranked 32, is now ranked 38th. Anna University and Mahatma Gandhi University, which now rank at 111 and 140, respectively, in the 2024 edition, were at 119 and 134 positions, respectively.

The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2025 reveals Asia’s top research universities. This year, as many as 853 universities from 35 countries and territories are ranked.

China leads the rankings, retaining first (Tsinghua University) and second place (Peking University) and holding five of the top 10 spots. Singapore’s National University of Singapore (3), Nanyang Technological University (4), Japan’s The University of Tokyo (5) and Hong Kong’s The University of Hong Kong (6) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (9) also feature in the top 10. Four countries rank for the first time – Uzbekistan, Bahrain, Mongolia and Syria. All six of Hong Kong’s ranked universities make the top 50 for the first time since 2017.
