In a major change from the past, the 2025–27 MBA batch at the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM), IIT Bombay, will welcome a larger number of students from non-engineering backgrounds. Until now, most of the students in the MBA programme were engineering graduates. However, with the latest update in eligibility rules, students with a three-year bachelor’s degree in any subject can now apply. This move is meant to create a more diverse and inclusive learning environment that better represents today’s complex business world.

Previously, the MBA programme at SJMSOM primarily admitted candidates with four-year degrees, often from technical backgrounds. The updated criteria for MBA admissions is mentioned below:

  • A bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks or a CPI of 6.5 out of 10. For candidates belonging to SC/ST/PWD categories, the requirement is 55% marks or a CPI of 6.0 out of 10. The degree must be awarded by a university or institution established by an Act of Parliament or State Legislature in India, or recognised as a deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. Equivalent qualifications recognised by the Ministry of Education, AICTE, AIU, or any reputed foreign university are also acceptable.
  • Candidates who are in the final year of their degree program or are awaiting results are eligible to apply, provided they have secured at least 60% aggregate marks (or 55% for SC/ST/PWD candidates) in all examinations completed up to the date of application. Final admission will be confirmed only upon fulfilment of the eligibility criteria.
  • Additionally, all applicants must have a valid CAT score to be considered for admission.

This expansion opens the doors to graduates from diverse fields such as arts, commerce, law, medicine, and more.

IIT Bombay MBA admission process at SJMSOM

The admission process for the MBA programme is structured in two phases:

  1. Shortlisting for Personal Interview (PI): Based on valid CAT scores, academic performance, and work experience.
