NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) commemorated the 135th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar with a week-long celebration titled “Jai Bhim Saptah”, from April 11 to 16, 2025. The event, jointly organized by the SC/ST Cell and the Initiative for Caste Equity (ICE), featured a rich schedule of lectures, panel discussions, exhibitions, performances, and workshops aimed at fostering awareness and inclusivity on campus. The Saptah began with a book exhibition and library tour attended by over 300 schoolchildren, followed by a blood donation drive and a screening of the documentary Chaityabhumi, accompanied by a discussion with director Somnath Waghmare and journalist Dhrubo Jyoti.

A key highlight was the panel discussion on “Caste and Mental Health,” which brought together mental health professionals and activists to explore caste-based trauma and systemic inequities in academia. Other events included a drawing competition, a theater performance (Neela Sooraj), and the screening of the film Jai Bhim.

On April 14, members of the IIT Delhi community participated in a visit to Sansad Bhawan to mark Ambedkar Jayanti. The Ambedkar Memorial Lecture, delivered by Anurag Bhaskar, Deputy Registrar at the Supreme Court and author of The Foresighted Ambedkar, provided deep insights into Ambedkar’s role in framing the Indian Constitution. The lecture was chaired by Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi.

Art and activism interwove throughout the week — from Madhubani art exhibits to shadow puppet shows and hands-on activities like “Print Your Preamble.” The event culminated in a Dignity March and caste sensitization workshop led by the Indian Institute of Dalit Studies, reinforcing the campus’s commitment to equity.

“Jai Bhim Saptah was not just a festival; it was a collective movement toward inclusive education and dignity for all,” said the organizers.
