NEW DELHI: IIT Delhi observed World Environment Day 2025 on June 5 with a series of awareness initiatives under the global theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.” The event, organized by the Academic Outreach and New Initiatives Office, featured expert talks and student engagement programs focused on sustainable living and environmental responsibility.
In his address, Prof. Babu J. Alappat from the Department of Civil Engineering discussed urgent environmental challenges and practical solutions in his talk, “Understanding Environmental Problems and Their Solutions.”
This was followed by a session led by BK Piyush, Director at Brahma Kumaris (Lodhi Road, New Delhi), who emphasized spiritual harmony with nature in his talk, “Living in Harmony with Nature.” Both sessions were part of the Sci Tech Spin: Lecture Series and were attended by students from various schools and colleges across Delhi NCR.
Continuing its sustainability efforts, IIT Delhi will organize a cleanliness drive on June 22 in collaboration with the NSS IITD, led by Prof. Jay Dhariwal of the Department of Design, with the goal of promoting a Net Zero Waste campus.
Prof. Dhariwal is also heading the second edition of Change Makers, a flagship outreach initiative on the theme “Sustainability and Innovation,” involving 120 students nationwide in a hybrid program from June 9 to 27.
IIT Delhi reiterated its commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and emphasized the importance of collective action in combating environmental threats like plastic pollution.
